Today I would like to introduce you to a favorite fictional female of mine. Her name is Suzie Shooter, also known as Shotgun Suzie, also known as Oh shit, it’s her run! If you, like me, love over the top action movies jam packed with violence and sarcasm you might enjoy the Nightside series by Simon R. Green, in which dear Suzie makes her home.
The Nightside is the dark heart of London, where it’s perpetually 3am in the morning and all the worst and best things can be found. Suzie is one of the best bounty hunters in the Nightside. She is extremely capable in all forms of combat but is best known for her use of a pump action shotgun, one barrel is blessed, the other cursed, so she is always doing damage to what she’s shooting at. She is also the main love interest for the main character John Taylor. Taylor left Nightside years ago and the series begins when he returns. His first encounter with Suzie is a little awkward considering that one of the reasons he left in the first place was that she had shot him.
Unfortunately, Suzie has a particularly dark past. She was not born in the Nightside, she started out in the real world with a mother and father and an older brother. Starting at 13 she was continually sexually assaulted by her brother until it resulted in a pregnancy. When she finally broke down and told her parents what happened they force her to terminate the pregnancy even though the child is nearly fully formed. They blame her for everything and make her stare at the corpse of her child.
She deals with this by murdering her brother, peeing on his body, and fleeing to the Nightside, where she only grows more angry and dangerous. As a result of this Suzie has extreme intimacy issues and hates to be touched. Something that Taylor always respects. As the series progresses she is able to overcome many of her issues and have a more intimate relationship with Taylor.
While she is not a major player in all of the books she is a steady presence throughout the series and she is never far from the action. While she is often described as beautiful she doesn’t care much for her looks and is very proud of her scars. Her face is burned terribly in a fight about halfway through the series and she is pretty stoked about it because it makes her already intimidating presence even more terrifying.
Suzie never backs down from a fight, she is fearless in the face of gods and monsters and is really only happy when she is on the hunt. In the times when she is not backing Taylor up on his bloody adventures she is off hunting perpetrators of her own. Suzie is endlessly loyal but if you cross her she will retaliate, suddenly, violently, and all over the place.
